There are many ways to show employees they\u2019re valued \u2014 and choosing the right approach isn\u2019t always straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>Some employers see a monetary bonus are the best way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoomshift.com\/blog\/great-work-perks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reward and motivate employees<\/a>. But others believe that monetary benefits aren\u2019t as important as non-monetary rewards. The reality is that all of these\u00a0can both be effective paths to incentivizing your employees for working hard and doing their job well.<\/p>\n<p>That said, financial incentives remain a strong motivator for many employees. Below are some practical tips on how to use bonuses as an incentive that works for your business in 2026.<\/p>\n<h3>Leverage the element of surprise<\/h3>\n<p>With any incentive, a great way to keep your employees motivated and engaged is to surprise them. Instead of offering a cash bonus for specific tasks, or at specific times of the year, keep your employees on their toes: offer a \u201cspot bonus\u201d as an impromptu way to say thanks. When your staff doesn\u2019t know how or when to expect a bonus, it won\u2019t become routine &#8211; and that means they\u2019ll be more surprised and more motivated by these bonuses when they do happen. In addition, your other team members may see a surprise \u201cspot bonus\u201d as an opportunity to step up their game and earn their own bonus.<\/p>\n<h3>Think big and small<\/h3>\n<p>Many employers make the mistake of writing off bonuses as part of an incentive program\u00a0or an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meridiancp.com\/insights\/long-term-incentive-lti-compensation-the-basics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LTI compensation<\/a><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">\u00a0<\/i>because they assume they\u2019ll be expensive.. But they don\u2019t have to be.
