How to Improve Employee Morale
Common wisdom used to encourage employees to stay with their employers for years at a time. In today’s highly mobile world, however, company loyalty isn’t necessarily a given. The fact is, workers nowadays have a lot of options, and they know it. Since a high turnover rate can cost your business money, it makes sense to do what you can to keep your employees happy. The good news is that if you are a manager, you have a big influence over whether your employees stick around or hit the road. Here are some tips on how to improve employee morale and increase tenure rates:
Provide a Sense of Belonging
If you think that every employee is an island, then you’re not seeing the big picture… and neither will they! The truth is that each person in your company is – or should be – fulfilling a function essential to the success of your business as a whole. Make sure that each of your workers understand how his or her job works in order to keep everything running smoothly. A sense of feeling needed is a great motivator for employees to keep at it when the going gets rough.
Show Them the Future
When employees start getting antsy and send out their resume to other companies, one big reason might be the perception of being in a dead-end situation. If you don’t provide the opportunity for upward mobility, then when your employees have mastered their current position, there’s only one place to go: up and out. Make an effort to promote from within before hiring outside the company for non-entry level positions.
Have a Heart
Your employees want to know that you care. If you don’t care, then neither will they. Let them know that they’re appreciated, and you’ll see that your workers will go above and beyond to contribute to the overall success of your business. Be available for them discuss problems in the workplace, and be receptive to their suggestions. In other words, treat your employees the way you would like to be treated.
Learning how to improve employee morale and retention can be a difficult goal to achieve, but once you have a core group of great members, you may need to up your management skills in order to inspire company loyalty. Remember first and foremost that your workers are people, and that if you can meet their needs for belonging, model the potential for future growth and act as a caring mentor, you have a good chance at keeping your people where you want them.
